ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell women's fencing assistant coach
Holly Buechel won the Women's Epee 40+ Gold Medal at the Veteran World Championships in Bahrain.
In pool action, Buechel finished seventh with a 5-1 record in pools to advance to the table portion of competition. After receiving a bye in the round of 64 she defeated Michell Ostrikoff of Canada in the round of 32 in the opening round 10-9.
She then went on to beat Lindsay Bottoms of Great Britian, and Helena Lowack of Germany to earn a spot on the semi-finals.
In the semi's, Buechel took on Austria's Martina Reumueller, earning a 10-6 victory to advance to the finals where she defeated Julia Ashcuk, who was competing as an individual, 10-6 to earn gold.
For Buechel this is her third gold medal of the season after finishing first first at the January and April NAC's, where she secured her spot on Team USA.
