ITHACA, N.Y. - The no.8-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team fell 3-2 to the Princeton Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink. The Big Red dropped to 10-5-1 on the season, while the Tigers improved to 11-4-0 on the year.
Lindzi Avar and
Mckenna Van Gelder scored goals for Cornell in the game.
Delaney Fleming,
Avi Adam, and
Georgia Schiff were credited with assists in the contest.
Annelies Bergmann made 15 saves on the night.
Issy Wunder (two) and Riley Sorokan scored goals for the Tigers. Gatfield (two), O'Leary (two), Alexander, and Kuehl registered assists. Uma Corniea earned 29 saves in the victory.
Wunder and Alexander opened the game with a pair of grade-A chances for Princeton. The Big Red responded with a few of their own, setting a strong tone for the pace of the game.
Grace Dwyer was tabbed with an interference infraction, giving the Tigers the game's first power-play midway through the first period. Cornell stood to task, stopping the Princeton power-play and holding them to just a single shot. The Big Red fed off of that momentum, and two minutes later Fleming found Avar who made it count to give Cornell a 1-0 lead.
Both teams were tasked with killing off penalties in the first 10 minutes of the second period. Moments after the successful Tiger penalty-kill, Wunder speared a three-goal burst by the Tigers to bring the game equal at 1-1. Wunder was responsible for the second goal 20 seconds later, giving Princeton it's first lead of the day. Two minutes after that, Sorokan joined the party to extend the advantage to 3-1.
The Big Red began the third period with a successful penalty kill that began at the end of the second frame. The Tigers also stopped a potent Cornell power-play, but two minutes later (10:33) Van Gelder put the puck behind Corniea to give Cornell life and a chance to make a push toward a comeback. For the second night in a row Bergmann skated out of net as the Big Red seeked an equalizer. Cornell produced numerous dangerous chances during the empty-net span of 2:29, but the puck would not bounce the Big Red's way as Princeton skated off with a win at Lynah Rink.
Top Performer: Issy Wunder (PRN) - two goals
Winning Goaltender: Uma Corniea (PRN) - 29 saves, win
