Ali, Lai Shine in #7 Women's Squash's Loss to #6 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Senior Alysa Ali and freshman Vicky Lai posted victories, but the No. 7-ranked Cornell women's squash team concluded its fall semester with a 6-3 loss to No. 6 Virginia on Saturday afternoon at the McArthur Squash Center.

Cornell (3-2) saw its two-match win streak come to an end as Virginia (6-1) captured victories at six of the nine positions to extend its winning streak in the series to seven matches.

Ali was strong at the No. 3 position, defeating Virginia's Maria Min in straight games, 13-11, 11-9, 11-4. The senior won all three games in one of the Big Red's best performances of the afternoon.

Lai showed her grit at No. 4, winning a four-game match against Clare Minnis. After dropping the second game 10-12, the freshman responded with an 11-4 third game and closed out the match with an 11-8 fourth game to secure the 11-8, 10-12, 11-4, 11-8 victory.

Junior Maya Voloshin battled back at No. 7 against Grace Fazzinga. After dropping the first two games 1-11 and 11-13, Voloshin won the third 13-11 and had leveled the fourth at 8-8 when Fazzinga was forced to retire from the match, giving Cornell its third point.

Virginia's depth proved decisive, as the Cavaliers captured wins at the top two positions and at Nos. 5, 6, 8 and 9. Senior Charlotte Pastel defeated junior Xin Ying Yee in straight games at No. 1, 11-8, 11-5, 11-8, while sophomore Lina Tammam edged senior Aishwarya Khubchandani in four games at No. 2, 11-5, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9.

The match featured four contests that extended to four or five games. At No. 5, Virginia's Nasreen Hashmi outlasted sophomore Sabine Ball in a five-game match, 4-11, 11-3, 11-3, 9-11, 11-1, while at No. 9, the Cavaliers' Ana Quijano claimed an 11-9, 8-11, 13-11, 4-11, 11-7 victory over freshman Lamees Shalaby.

UP NEXT
Cornell returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 11, when it hosts Drexel at the Belkin Squash Courts at noon. The Big Red hold an 8-4 all-time advantage over the Dragons and have won three straight meetings, including a pair of victories last season. Cornell posted a 5-4 win at home on Jan. 13, 2024, before defeating Drexel, 7-2, at the CSA National Team Championships on March 6, 2025.
