EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Cornell fencing team went 4-2 on day one of the two-day Schiller Duals on Saturday afternoon at Northwestern's Ryan Fieldhouse. Highlighting the day was Cornell's 16-11 upset of No. 2 Notre Dame in improving to 28-10 on the season.
It was a brilliant effort by the sabre group that allowed the Big Red to upset the Fighting Irish, rolling to a 9-0 record that was the difference.
Nora Weber and
Natalie Leung were both 3-0 against Notre Dame, while
Elaine Hong was 2-0 and
Nawal O'Neil won her only bout to complete the sweep.
Rei Weintraub's two wins in foil also helped put Cornell over the top for its second consecutive season knocking off a second-ranked Fighting Irish team at Northwestern.
The Big Red also picked up victories over Denison (16-11), Lawrence (23-4) and Wayne State (21-6), while dropping contests to the fifth-ranked Wildcats (19-8) on their home strip, as well as No. 11 Temple (18-9).
All three weapon groups won more than 30 bouts and posted winning records on the day, with Weintraub's 12-6 record in foil leading all Cornell competitors with weapon-mate
Renata Chusid next up at 11-7.
Natalie Leung was 9-5 in epee, while Isabella Carvalho (9-4) and
Fiona Neibart (9-3) claimed nine wins apiece in sabre.
The Big Red closes out the regular season with five duals on Sunday beginning with a matchup with UC San Diego at 9 a.m. ET. Cornell will also fence No. 10 Ohio State, No. 14 Stanford, Incarnate Word and Detroit Mercy.
