Emily Garner Earns First Home Ivy Win Against Dartmouth

ITHACA, N.Y. — Rebecca Quinn Morgan '60 Head Coach of Women's Basketball Emily Graner earned her first home Ivy League win as the Big Red defeated the Big Green 56-43 on Saturday night at Newman Arena. Cornell moved to 7-16 overall on the season and 3-7 in the Ivy League with its win.

Cornell was able to bounce back from its tough loss to Harvard on Friday and find success on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball while limiting its turnovers in order to break away from the Big Green in this contest.

The Big Red's offense was highly efficient in the contest with four players scoring in the double digits. Clarke Jackson led the way for Cornell with 14, Rachel Kaus had 13, Azareya Kilgoe had 12, Summer Parker-Hall had 10 and to round out the Big Red scoring Paige Engels had seven. Dartmouth's scoring was led by Zeynep Ozel who notched eight.

Cornell's shooting was above average throughout the game as they shot 54 percent overall. Jackson and Kilgoe highlighted the bunch with Jackson going 6-for-8 from the field and Kilgoe going 4-for-7 from the field. Paige Engels shot 50 percent from the field and from three in the contest as well.

While the Big Red's offense was clicking throughout the game, its defense also stood strong forcing 17 turnovers and having 10 steals. Jackson and Parker-Hall each had three steals on the night, Engels had two and Kilgoe and Kaus each had one.

The boards were a battle between both teams with Cornell just edging Dartmouth out 30-27. The Big Red were successful on the defensive rebounds having 23 and struggled getting offensive rebounds where they notched seven while the Big Green were pretty equal having 13 offensive and 14 defensive rebounds. Jackson led the team in rebounds with nine, Kaus had seven, Engels and Parker-Hall had three, Kilgoe had two and Kelsey Langston, Emily Pape and Vivienne Knee had one each.

The game began extremely close with both teams trading baskets back-and-forth in the first quarter of play. The defensive play on both sides was the most impressive aspect of the game which forced the score to be a low 9-9 tie. The second quarter was also a tight battle throughout until Cornell went on a four-point run to end the half with a 24-17 lead. The Big Red held on to its lead as it outscored the Big Green 32-26 in the second half to take its first home Ivy League win 56-43.
