No. 4 Syracuse Powers Past Cornell, 18-10

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse's Daniella Guyette made 14 saves to set the tone and the Orange offense did the rest as the No. 4 Orange topped Cornell 18-10 on Tuesday afternoon at the JMA Wireless Dome. SU improved to 3-0, while the Big Red slipped to 1-1.

Five different Cornell players had at least three points, with Emma Wilmot leading the way with her goal and three assists. Both Caitlin Slaminko and Josie Vogel recorded hat tricks and Alexa Donahoe and Maggie Pons each recorded a goal and two assists. Slaminko added seven draw controls to her total, while Dillyn Patten had a balanced effort with an assist, three ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls. Mackenzie Clark (two saves, six goals allowed) and Ellie Horner (four saves, 12 goals allowed) split time in the cage.

The Orange held a narrow 31-30 edge in shots, and both teams put 24 on cage, but Guyette proved to be the difference. The stat sheet was otherwise even, with both teams scooping up 16 ground ball and winning 16 draw controls. Syracuse held a 10-7 advantage in caused turnovers, but committed two more turnovers than the Big Red on the night (19-17).

The visitors got on the board first when Ella Wilmot tallied just 1:28 into the contest and led 2-1 midway through the first. The Orange seized control over the final six minutes of the quarter, closing with five unanswered scores. Guyette stopped three shots in the first quarter and five in the first 18 minutes to keep Cornell at bay. After Slaminko netted her first of the day to cut the lead to 6-3, Syracuse responded with six straight to all but put the game out of reach. The home team led 12-5 at the break after Donahoe and Pons scored eight seconds apart in the final minute before halftime.

The second half was more defensive-minded and the teams traded goals in the fourth, but the Orange were never seriously threatened and twice put the lead into double figures. Each time, Cornell responded with a goal and netted three in the final 5:36 to narrow the final deficit.

Olivia Adamson (three goals, two assists), Molly Guzik (two goals, three assists) and Emma Ward (three goals, two assists) all had five-point days to lead the victorious Orange, while Meghan Rode won eight draws and Coco Vandiver was credited with six caused turnovers.
