TROY, N.Y. - The no. 4-ranked Cornell women's ice hockey team defeated the Renssealaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers 4-0 on Friday night at Houston Field House. The Big Red improved to 18-4-4, while the Engineers dropped to 12-16-3.
Piper Grober,
Ashley Messier (power-play), and
Georgia Schiff registered Big Red goals in the contest.
Grace Dwyer (two),
Gabbie Rud,
Alyssa Regalado, Grober, and
Mckenna Van Gelder were credited with assists.
Annelies Bergmann collected 10 saves on the night.
The Big Red led the way in the first-period by a wide-margin as far as shots were concerned. Although the Big Red out-shot RPI 16-2 on-goal in the opening period, Cornell could not manage to find pay-dirt leaving the score at 0-0 after the first stanza.
Grober opened up the scoring in the game when Dwyer and Rud found her streaking down the ice, as she would put the puck five-hole on the breakaway opportunity. The Engineers found themselves on the penalty-kill for the second time in the game, and Cornell made them pay this time when Messier found the back of the net. Moments later, Dwyer made a nifty move at the blue-line to clear the shooting lane, and Schiff tipped Dwyer's shot past the Engineer's net-minder to extend the lead to three.
Adam added more on the scoreboard for Cornell early in the third period. The Engineers nearly produced a spoiler around the seven-minute mark, but
Lindzi Avar took a dive in front of the empty-net to save Bergmann's shutout. Bergmann would ultimately finished the game unscathed, earning her seventh shutout of the season.
