PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Cornell fencing team topped No. 12 Yale to close after bouncing back from a narrow loss to No. 7 Penn earlier in the day to match the Big Red's best finish at the Ivy League Championships since 1983. Cornell finished the round robin with a 2-4 record when the two-day meet concluded on Sunday afternoon at The Palestra.
The Big Red and coach
Ariana Klinkov close its dual meet schedule with a 34-15 record and matched its best win total at the Ivy League Championship since going 3-1 more than four decades ago.
The epee squad had two fencers earn second-team All-Ivy honors, as
Nora Weber and
Ketki Ketkar both finished in the top six overall. Ketkar, in particular, was outstanding on Sunday with an 8-1 record on the day. Both played a big part in the weapon's winning overall record in the event, going 28-26 in the championships.
It was the sabre unit that was able to help lift the Big Red over Yale, squeaking by the Bulldogs 14-13. The group was 6-3 in the win, providing the margin in the tight victory.
Samantha Marsee was 7-8 overall to pace the sabre team in wins during the championship.
The foil group, led by
Renata Chusid (8-7), gave ironwoman-type effort all weekend. Chusid and teammates
Rei Weintraub and
Mia Jo each fenced 15 matches for the Big Red without reserves.
