Late Free Throws Give Brown 38-36 Win Over Women's Basketball

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Brown's Grace Arnolie hit a pair of free throws with six seconds left and got one final defensive stop in a game full of them as the Bears grinded out a 38-36 victory over Cornell on Senior Day at Newman Arena. The Bears kept alive their Ivy League Tournament hopes in improving to 11-15 (5-8 Ivy), while the Big Red fell to 7-19 (3-10 Ivy).

In a game that saw both teams shoot 25 percent from the floor, it was the free-throw line that was the difference. The visitors made 14-of-21 shots from the charity stripe, including the game winner, while Cornell missed six of nine, including two go-ahead attempts that missed with 20 seconds left.

In her final collegiate home game, senior Summer Parker-Hall led the Big Red with 13 points along with five rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. Emily Pape posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Clarke Jackson also had 10 rebounds. Azareya Kilgoe netted four points with eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Cornell turned the ball over just nine times and outscored Brown's bench 19-0 and 24-14 in the paint.

Brown's Gianna Aiello posted 15 points, 16 rebounds and four blocked shots, while Arnolie scored 15 with seven rebounds. The Bears held a narrow 43-41 rebounding edge and won despite having just three assists to 16 turnovers.

The two teams struggled to make shots from the perimeter all night, combining to shoot 5-of-43 from beyond the arc (12 percent).

After leading 15-12 after the first quarter, Cornell's offense went cold for a long stretch, scoring just nine points on 4-of-31 shooting (13 percent) over the second and third stanzas. Its defense continued to keep the home team in the contest and trailed just 31-24 entering the final quarter.

Cornell outscored the Bears 12-7 in the final 10 minutes, taking a lead at 34-33 with 4:46 left when Pape connected on a 3-pointer moments after picking up a steal on the other end. It was defensive plays like that that turned the contest around, and Pape hit two free throws with 78 seconds left to knot the game at 36-36 after a great defensive sequence got the home team in position to strike. The Big Red drew an offensive foul for a chance to take the lead, but Cornell missed a pair of free throws, then missed a jumper after collecting the offensive rebound. That set up the Bears for the go-ahead score on the ensuing possession.
