Three Meet Weekend To Open Outdoor Season For Women's Track and Field

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cornell women's track and field travels to three separate meets to kick off the outdoor season at the USF Alumni Invitational hosted by University of South Florida, 49er Classic hosted by University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the Penn Challenge hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.

USF ALUMNI INVITATIONAL MEET INFO

The USF Alumni Invitational is a two-day event that will start for the Big Red at 2 p.m. on Friday for the women's long jumpers and pole vault followed by track events starting at 5 p.m. The Big Red will primarily send top sprinters, vaulters and jumpers to this meet.

49ER CLASSIC MEET INFO

Cornell will send all throwing events to the 49er Classic on Friday and Saturday. Field events start at 11 a.m. on Friday morning with the hammer throw and at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the Javelin.

PENN CHALLENGE MEET INFO

The remaining athletes ranging from distance, hurdles and few field events will attend the Penn Challenge. Field events start at 10:30 a.m. with running events at 12 p.m. with women competing before the men.

The field will include athletes from Columbia, LaSalle, Lehigh, Navy, Penn, Penn State, Princeton, Rutgers, St. Joseph's, Temple and Villanova.

LAST TIME OUT

Cornell women's track and field placed fourth overall at the 2025 Ivy League Heptagonal Championships at Barton Hall on March 2 in Barton Hall. The Big Red saw standout performances across multiple events, highlighted by freshman Syna Sony's victory in the high jump with a career-best mark of 1.74m, making her the team's sole champion of the weekend.

On the track, Augustine Haquet put up an impressive race in the mile, crossing the finish line in 4:40.25 to earn a silver medal. Avery Hilliard soared to new heights in the pole vault, clearing a personal-best 4.16m to place third. The distance squad also made its mark, with Gwen Parks clocking a career-best 2:44.74 in the 1000m and Mairead Clas securing third in the 3000m with a time of 9:27.23. Clas later returned in the 5000m, finishing fourth with an time of 16:31.30.

Several Big Red athletes turned in top-five finishes, contributing valuable points to the team standings. Francine Stevens took fifth in the 400m (55.85), Katja Jackson matched that placement in the 800m (2:09.19), and Imani Reid sprinted to fifth in the 200m (24.29). In the field events, Noelle Elkinton was the lone podium finisher on the second day, placing fifth in the shot put with a mark of 14.63m.

Cornell also found success late in the meet in the relays. The distance medley relay team of Maisie McManus, Natasha Redmond, Tenley Nelson, and Haquet secured a runner-up finish, adding crucial points to the team's total. The 4x400m squad featuring Elise Sawyer, Imani Reid, Francine Stevens, and Reyne Rodrigues claimed fourth, while the 4x800m team of Maddie Poole, Bronwyn Parks, Gwen Parks, and Katja Jackson finished fifth, rounding out a solid championship effort for the Big Red.
