Cornell Track Continues Strong UK Campaign with Team Victory at Birmingham Ivy League Match

BIRMINGHAM, England — The Cornell track and field team continued its successful summer campaign in the United Kingdom on Friday, combining with the University of Pennsylvania to defeat the Birmingham University Athletic Club, 256-174, at the University of Birmingham Ivy League Match.

The combined Ivy League squad claimed both team competitions, with the men earning a 132-88 victory and the women posting a 124-86 win.

Cornell athletes collected five individual event victories and a pair of relay wins during the competition.

On the women's side, Lauren Smith captured the javelin title with a winning throw of 38.80 meters on her third attempt. The Big Red also won the 4x100-meter relay as the quartet of Divine Bamgboye, Jailyn Milord, Milan Ramey and Olivia Walters crossed the line first in 47.01. Cornell's second relay team of Elizabeth Graham, Rikki Carver, Amy Hillyard and Paula-Marie Brown finished runner-up in 49.58.

Divine Bamgboye added a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (14.19), while Francine Stevens placed second in the 400 meters (57.18). Claire Springer was runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 13.30 meters.

Additional scoring performances included Fiona Lee, who finished fourth in the 800 meters (2:16.73), Elizabeth Graham, who placed fourth in the long jump (5.31m), Olivia Walters, who took fourth in the 100 meters (12.87), and Syna Sony, who finished fourth in the high jump (1.56m).

The men were led by Edgar Thielens, who won the 800 meters in 1:53.10, Stepan Matura, who claimed the long jump title with a leap of 6.89 meters, and Ryder King, who captured first in the 400-meter hurdles in 53.39.

Will Hauser recorded a personal-best time of 8:41.37 to finish second in the 3,000 meters, while Griffin Mandirola followed closely in third at 8:43.04. Garrett Brennan added a runner-up finish in the 100 meters (11.26), and Joseph Rachiele placed second in the javelin with a throw of 46.87 meters.

Joe Seib finished third in the shot put with a mark of 16.25 meters on his second attempt, Ryan Brynjolfson cleared 1.95 meters to place fourth in the high jump, Colin Martens took fifth in the mile (4:36.88), Griffin Cords finished sixth in the 800 meters (1:55.27), and the 4x100-meter relay team of Peter Northup, Edgar Thielens, Joe Seib and Joseph Rachiele placed third in 50.18.
