NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Eighth-ranked Columbia won three close singles matches after claiming the doubles point to lift the Lions to a 4-0 sweep of No. 40 Cornell on Saturday afternoon at the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center. The Lions improved to 10-5 (1-0 Ivy) with the victory, while the Big Red fell to 10-6 (0-1 Ivy).
The two teams were evenly matched throughout singles play, though the Lions were able to close out victories at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 in straight sets to claim the victory. Top-ranked defending NCAA singles champion Michael Zheng of Columbia won a tiebreaker in the first set and earned a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 decision over Cornell's 47th-ranked
Radu Papoe in the top slot in the ladder.
Adit Sinha was knotted at a set apiece and tied in the third, while
Rodrigo Fernandes and
Felipe Pinzon also were tied with set wins before their matches went unfinished.
Cornell begins a three-game Ivy home stand when it welcomes Yale to Reis Tennis Center on Saturday, April 5 at 1 p.m.
