Softball Heads To Final Tournament Before Conference Play

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell softball (4-6) will travel to Baltimore, Md. to face Holy Cross, University of Rhode Island and host UMBC at the UMBC Invitational this weekend with first pitch at 10 a.m. on Friday morning.

SCOUTING HOLY CROSS

Holy Cross has started the season 3-5 with wins over Morehead State and St. Peter's. Emma Fong is leading the team in batting average (.385), slugging percentage (.615) and on base percentage (.500). Jenna Whlpple has team-high seven hits and four RBIs for the Crusaders. Sophia Roncone and Jordan Goedel have controlled the mound for Holy Cross. Roncone has the lowest ERA at 3.71 over 22 innings while Goedel has struck out 22 batters.

SCOUTING ROAD ISLAND

Road Island is 2-8 through two tournaments so far this spring. Mandi Hanewich is leading the Rams with a .364 batting average off eight hits and a .481 on base percentage. Emily Power has recorded the most RBIs with five for Rhody. Ashley Hibbard has the lowest ERA at 3.29 in her four appearances for the Rams with 19 strikeouts.

SCOUTING UMBC

The host UMBC are currently 2-11 with wins over East Carolina and Niagara. The Retrievers have also faced Ohio State and No. 10 Georgia at the UGA Tournament. Sophomore Haley Luginbill has had a standout start for UMBC hitting .444 with a .861 slugging percentage. She has 16 hits, four home runs, resulting in 12 RBIs through 13 games. Eimly Riggs also has an impressive slugging percentage at .636 with three home runs of her own. Jerzie Nutile is the Retrievers go to on the mound. Through 26.1 innings, the senior pitcher has a 5.85 ERA and 1.90 WHIP. Kya Matter is leading the pitching staff with 25 strikeouts over 23 innings.

PARTY AT PALMER RECAP

Cornell went 2-3 on the weekend at the Party at Palmer hosted by Virginia. The Big Red totaled 41 hits that resulted in 24 runs over the weekend. Highlights of the weekend include Lauren Holt's second home run of the season during the Seton Hall game on Sunday, the sixth inning of the Hofstra game on Saturday where the Big Red racked together five hits in the to break away from the Pride pouring on four more runs to end the game at 11-3 an inning early and then a seventh inning comeback on Friday against Hofstra capped by a two RBI single from Charlize Cai down the left field line to walk off the game for the Big Red.

Cornell will have a week break before Ivy League play starts on March 22 with a double header at home against Yale starting at 12:30 p.m.
