Cornell Softball Overcomes Holy Cross in Nine Inning Battle

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Cornell softball team (7-6) beat Holy Cross in their second meeting at the UMBC Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Due to weather, the second game of the day against host UMBC was canceled.

Cornell 4, Holy Cross 3

Mila Fiordalisi pitched all nine innings for the Big Red. The freshman struck out six batters with no earned runs.

The Big Red put up the first run by capitalizing on an Holy Cross error and then fielder's choice that allowed Addison Pressley to score and gave Lauren Holt an RBI. The Crusaders scored in the third inning in the same fashion off two Cornell errors to tie up the game one a piece.

No one scored from the fourth inning to the seventh to force the game into extra innings. With overtime rules, a runner is placed on second for each team at the start of each at bat.

The top of the eighth Holy Cross's runner advanced to third on a wild pitch then scored on a sacrifice fly to center field to take the first advantage at 2-1.

Cornell answered in the same inning with a run of their own with a double to left center from Emma Harshberger to score Pressley for even twos on the board.

The Crusaders used small ball to move their runner from second to third with a sacrifice bunt. The runner was then batted in with a ground out to shortstop. 3-2 going into the bottom of the ninth.

Charlize Cai was placed on second base for the Big Red. A popout to left field from Susanna Pate advanced her to third followed by a single from Maddie Ullensvang to score her. Ullensvang then stole second to put herself into scoring position. Emma Antich ended the game with a single up the middle to score the runner and take the game 4-3.
