ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's sailing team captured its third consecutive MAISA Women's Team Racing Championship, topping regatta runner-up Georgetown in the final race of the weekend on Sunday afternoon at Seneca Lake. The Big Red's 20-1 record over the two days was one better than the Hoyas, who finished 19-2. Cornell also placed four on the MAISA all-conference skipper team.
Senior
Bridget Green and sophomore
Winborne Majette each earned first-team all-league accolades, while junior
Sophia Devling and freshman
Gilda Dondona was second-team selections following the weekend's racing action.
Heading into the final of the 84 races over the weekend, both Georgetown and Cornell sported 19-1 records - both teams had only lost to each other. Georgetown took the first matchup in round one, while the BIg Red answered in round two. With the title on the line, Big Red boats finished 1-2-5 to claim the title, its third straight and fourth overall.
Green, Devling and Majette skippered the Big Red's entries, with
Sophia Mulvania,
Sophia Fogarty,
Sophia Pearce,
Kate Moran and
Amelia Neumann serving as crew. The pairings were Green and Pearce, Devling and Mulvania and Majette and Neumann in the decisive race that clinched the championship.
Cornell also competed at Navy's Trutun Umsted Regatta, finishing 14th overall. Dondona sailed A division alongside
Hope Campbell, Theodore Taylor and Kathleen Keller, while B division featured Marcus Greco and
Ava Gustafson as skippers with Keller and
Kate Constan as crew.
The Big Red will compete in its only home regatta of the spring when it hosts the America Trophy on Saturday and Sunday, April 19-20 out of the Merrill Family Sailing Center on Cayuga Lake.
