Penn Uses Potent Offense to Earn Series Sweep Over Baseball

ITHACA, N.Y. — Scoring 16 runs on 17 hits, the Penn baseball team (16-12, 10-2 Ivy League) extended its winning streak to eight games — seven of which have been in Ivy League play — with a 16-1 victory over Cornell (10-13, 5-7 Ivy League) at Booth Field on Monday afternoon, completing the three-game sweep of the Big Red.

Nick Spaventa and Ernie Echevarria spearheaded the Quakers' offensive effort, each going 2-for-5 with a double and a home run. Together, Spaventa and Echevarria drove in nine RBI on the day. Gavin Collins topped a group of seven Penn players who recorded multi-hit performances, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Will Tobin notched his second win of the season for Penn, surrendering one run on five hits across six innings, with three walks and six strikeouts. Connor Darling and Thomas Shurtleff combined to allow just one hit from Cornell over the final three innings, with both pitchers recording two strikeouts.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Sam Keene gave up seven runs on six hits during the first two innings. He issued one walk and struck out one Quaker batter. Junior right-handers Josh Shea and TJ Swidorski, along with freshman left-handed pitcher Will Siwinski, all delivered scoreless outings in relief.

Junior right fielder Caden Wildman delivered the only multi-hit performance for Cornell, going 2-for-2 and drawing a pair of walks. Senior first baseman Kyle Musser registered the lone extra-base hit of the day, blasting a one-out home run in the first inning to open the scoring.

Penn responded to Musser's home run with a seven-run second inning, igniting the Quakers' streak of 16 unanswered runs. Ryan Taylor put Penn ahead for good with a bases-clearing triple to the right-center field gap and later scored on a wild pitch. Echevarria extended the Quakers' lead to 7-1 with a three-run home run to cap off the scoring in the second.

Collins drove in Penn's next two runs with an RBI double in the third inning and a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Gavin Degnan plated the Quakers' 10th consecutive run with another RBI double in the sixth inning. An RBI double by Echevarria along the left-field line set up Spaventa for a two-RBI double of his own, which extended Penn's lead to 13-1. Spaventa concluded the scoring with a three-run home run in the ninth inning.

GAME NOTES
