CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Combining for 27 runs and 34 base hits, the Cornell baseball team (11-16, 6-9 Ivy League) outlasted Harvard (8-22, 5-9 Ivy League) in a 14-13 slugfest at blustery O'Donnell Field on Sunday afternoon, preventing the Crimson from sweeping the three-game series and snapping the Big Red's seven-game losing streak.
All nine Big Red starters scored at least one run, with five players crossing home plate twice. Eight of Cornell's nine starters registered base hits, six of whom had multiple hits. Sophomore second baseman
Owen Carlson and senior first baseman
Kyle Musser recorded three hits, both going 3-for-5. Carlson drove in a team-leading three RBI.
Sophomore catcher
Mark Quatrani recorded two of the Big Red's six extra-base hits, contributing a pair of doubles in his 2-for-3 performance and earning three free passes (one walk and two hit by pitches). Senior center fielder
Jakobi Davis hit the Big Red's only home run with a leadoff blast.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher
Ethan Van Sice earned his first collegiate win after relieving freshman left-handed pitcher
Sam Keene. Junior
TJ Swidorski secured his first collegiate save after pitching the final two innings.
All nine of Harvard's starters recorded a run and had a hit, which was highlighted by George Cooper going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and driving in three RBI. Matt Giberti (3-for-6, three runs) and William Lybrook (3-for-5, home run, three RBI) each contributed three hits.
Brian Dowling was the pitcher of record for Harvard, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits in 2.1 innings of relief for Crimson starting pitcher Gio Colasante (3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO).
Cornell jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Davis hit Cornell's first leadoff home run since Wils Guy on March 25, 2022, also against Harvard. Carlson capped the last of Cornell's three consecutive hits to begin the second with an RBI single that brought in senior left fielder
Ryan Porter, who led off the frame with a double down the left-field line.
The lead shifted four times between the third and sixth innings as an RBI single by Giberti and a two-run double by Cooper put the Crimson ahead 3-2 in the third. Cornell regained its two-run lead, 5-3, when sophomore shortstop
Kevin Hager recorded the last of three consecutive hits to open the fourth inning, singling home Musser. The Big Red's other two runs in the frame were scored during stolen base attempts.
Harvard regained the lead in the fifth inning, 6-5, with a wind-aided two-out, three-run home run by Lybrook that barely cleared the top of the fence in right field. Later, Cornell scored eight runs in the sixth inning to take a 13-6 lead.
Davis ignited the Big Red's flurry of runs with a sacrifice fly, allowing the next seven Big Red hitters to reach base safely. An RBI double by Quatrani ultimately gave the Big Red the lead for good, before a hit by pitch drawn by Wildman with the bases loaded became the first of four consecutive plate appearances that led to runs for the Big Red. Porter drew a bases-loaded walk, setting up a two-RBI double by Swidorski and a two-RBI single by Carlson.
Cornell's lead was cut to 13-11 after Harvard scored five unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Colasante and Shulman each recorded RBI singles before Jordan Kang capped the Crimson's four-run seventh with a two-run home run. Harvard's lone run in the eighth came on a double play induced by Swidorski to the first batter he faced out of the bullpen.
An RBI single by Musser in the ninth inning increased the Big Red's lead to 14-11, which proved crucial, as Harvard scored twice in the bottom of the ninth with two outs on an RBI double by Giberti and an RBI single by Cooper. Swidorski thwarted the Crimson's chances of tying the game by inducing a game-ending fielder's choice.

A LOOK ON DECK
Cornell will continue its eight-game road trip next weekend by returning to northern New England, where it will face Dartmouth (7-21, 5-10 Ivy League) in a three-game series in Hanover, N.H.
The series is scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 26, with a doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Although the Big Red traditionally played both Harvard and Dartmouth on the same weekend from 1970 to 2017, this will mark only the second time in program history that Cornell travels to northern New England on consecutive weekends to face the Crimson and Big Green. The only other instance occurred when the Big Red played twin bills on May 17, 1947 (Dartmouth) and May 24, 1947 (Harvard).
After sweeping last year's three-game regular-season series against Dartmouth, Cornell will seek to achieve its first four-game win streak over the Big Green since claiming five consecutive victories between May 7, 1983, and May 5, 1985.

The Big Red will also seek to register its third consecutive series victory over the Big Green, a feat not accomplished since winning seven straight season series between 1976 and 1982, during Cornell's program record 11-game win streak over Dartmouth. Cornell played Dartmouth only once during the streak in 1977, 1978, and 1981.
