VESTAL, N.Y. — Binghamton's Evin Sullivan hit two home runs and drove in four RBI as the host Bearcats (21-19, 9-9 America East) used a three-run fourth inning to break a 5-5 tie and secure an 8-5 victory over the Cornell baseball team (11-20, 6-12 Ivy League) in a rain-shortened contest at Bearcats Baseball Complex on Tuesday night.
Freddy Forgione joined Sullivan as the only Bearcat to record multiple hits. Along with Sullivan's two home runs, Matt Bolton and Luke Haskell each hit doubles, while Zach Rogacki had a triple, resulting in five of Binghamton's nine hits being extra-base hits during the six-inning contest.
Cornell took advantage of Binghamton's opener, Brady Bouchard, who surrendered five runs on six hits in the first two innings and issued two walks. Caden Rothbaum and Aidan Milburn stifled the Big Red's offense for the next three-plus innings, allowing a two-out bunt single by senior left fielder
John Quinlan in the third and a leadoff walk by senior center fielder
Jakobi Davis to begin the sixth.
Senior two-way player
William Jaun earned his second start of the season on the mound, with both starts against Binghamton. Jaun allowed two runs on three hits over two innings and struck out one Bearcat batter. Freshman right-hander
Tavian Ramos and junior right-hander
Josh Shea combined to give up the final six runs scored by Binghamton, while senior right-hander
Chris Ellison came out of the bullpen and tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Sophomore second baseman
Owen Carlson went 2-for-3 on the night, being the only Big Red player with multiple hits. Freshman catcher
Mason Barela ignited a five-run second inning for Cornell, capitalizing on a leadoff walk drawn by sophomore shortstop
Kevin Hager with a two-run home run that sailed into the Big Red's left-field bullpen.
After consecutive outs, Cornell initiated a two-out rally that allowed the Big Red to score three additional runs from an RBI double by senior first baseman
Kyle Musser and RBI singles by sophomore designated hitter
Mark Quatrani and senior right fielder
Ryan Porter.
Binghamton joined the offensive effort in the second inning as Sullivan opened the Bearcats' half of the frame with a leadoff home run. Following back-to-back singles, Jaun induced a double play that brought another run across home plate for the hosts.
Making just his fifth appearance in the outfield this season, Porter preserved the Big Red's 5-2 lead by leaping against the outfield wall to rob Todd Abraham of a leadoff home run in the third inning.
Despite Porter's defensive efforts to maintain Cornell's lead, Sullivan recorded his second home run in as many innings, launching an off-speed pitch from Shea off the batter's eye for a two-out, three-run homer that tied the game at 5-5.
A trio of RBI hits in the fourth inning helped Binghamton take an 8-5 lead as Abraham sparked another two-out rally for the Bearcats with an RBI single, which was followed by an RBI double from Bolton and an RBI triple by Rogacki.
Play was halted in the top of the sixth with two outs and a runner on first base as a line of strong thunderstorms rolled into the area. Following a 32-minute delay, play was called, resulting in a Binghamton victory.
