Heavyweight Rowing 3V8 Advances to 'B' Final on Day Two at 2025 IRA National Championship

PENNSAUKEN TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Despite finishing sixth in its semifinal race, Cornell's men's heavyweight rowing 3V8 crew clinched a spot in Sunday's 'B' Final on the second day of racing on the Cooper River at the 2025 IRA National Championship on Saturday afternoon.
 
Competing in the latter AB semifinal, Cornell's 3V8 finished last among six crews with a time of 5:54.260. Harvard secured a wire-to-wire victory, finishing 2.38 seconds ahead of second-place Syracuse and 3.35 seconds faster than Yale, who also advanced to Sunday morning's 'A' Final.
 
The Big Red will compete in the 3V8 'B' Final, which will launch from Lane 1 on Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., racing against Brown, Boston University, Dartmouth, Northeastern, and Penn.
 
Cornell's 1V8 crew secured first place in the first of two 'CD' semifinal races, earning a spot in Sunday's 'C' Final. The Big Red started with a 0.612-second advantage over La Salle at the 500-meter mark, but the Explorers recorded the fastest times in the next two 500-meter segments, taking a narrow 0.255-second lead over the Big Red. However, Cornell rallied in the final 500 meters to achieve a 0.460-second victory over La Salle and crossed the finish line 0.910 seconds ahead of third place finishing Boston University.
 
Posting the fastest two splits over the first 1000 meters (1:22.989 and 1:26.281), Cornell's 2V8 held the lead through the 1500-meter mark, but Temple roared back over the final 500 meters to claim the victory by 0.520 seconds.
 
With their first- and second-place finishes, the 1V8 and 2V8 crews each advanced to their respective 'C' Finals. The 2V8 will open Cornell's slate of racing on Sunday at 9:04 a.m. (Lane 2) before the 1V8 launches at 9:20 a.m. (Lane 4).
 
Rounding out the quartet of races for Cornell on the day was the Big Red's 1V4 crew in the 'C' Final, where it finished fifth out of six crews with a time of 6:37.630. Marist, who were in third place after 500 meters surged past Stanford and Stetson to take first place for the rest of the piece, where it had a 1.98-second victory over Stetson. Florida Tech, which was in fifth place at the 500-meter mark, finished in third.
