LOS ANGELES – Incoming Cornell men's hockey freshman goaltender
Alexis Cournoyer was the only player from the Cornell men's hockey team to be drafted on the second day of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft at the Peacock Theater on Saturday afternoon, being selected by the Montréal Canadiens in the fifth round (145th overall).
Cournoyer, the fifth-ever Big Red player drafted by Montréal, became the first Cornell goaltender selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 23 years, since David LeNeveu was chosen 46th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in 2002. The 6-foot-4 netminder also became Cornell's 13th goaltender to have his name called in an NHL Draft.
Entering the 2025 NHL Entry Draft as the No. 16-ranked North American goaltender by NHL Central Scouting, Cournoyer is coming off an impressive 2024-25 season, which he split between Truro in the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MJAHL) and Cape Breton in the Québec Maritime Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). After posting an 8-11-1 record with a 2.83 goals-against average and .927 save percentage in 21 games with Truro, Cournoyer had a 13-6-1 record with a 1.82 goals-against average, .942 save percentage, and three shutouts in 21 regular-season games with Cape Breton.
With Cournoyer's selection, Cornell will have nine NHL draft picks on the 2025-26 roster, tied for the third-highest total in program history (1989-90 and 2005-06). Only the teams from 1990-91 (14) and 2004-05 (10) had more draftees.
