NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's tennis team had a strong opening weekend showing at the Columbia Invitational, earning solid results in non-scoring duals against Wagner, Columbia and Stony Brook.
The Big Red posted a 13-10 overall record in singles, with freshman
Dylan Gelber making her mark with a perfect 3-0 start.
Andrea Martinez De Los Rios,
Emma Baker and
Tanya Fan each won two matches apiece. Gelber and Martinez De Los Rios combined to go 2-1 as a tandem in doubles, bettered only by a 2-0 mark by
Emma Baker and
Victoria Zhao. In doubles, Cornell earned a 6-5 record.
"This weekend was a great first tournament for our team. We're proud of the energy and effort our student-athletes brought to the court, and we're eager to build on this," said
Katie Zordani, The Carl H. Meinig '31 Head Coach of Women's Tennis. "Over the next two weeks, we'll refine our skills based on what we saw and continue to grow so we're even stronger heading into our next tournament. I'm also excited for Dylan, who picked up her first win for the Big Red."
The Big Red will have a number of individuals competing at the ITA All-American Championships on Sept. 20 in Cary, N.C.
