Men's Hockey Boasts Dozen Alumni at NHL Training Camps

ITHACA, N.Y. — Twelve former Cornell men's hockey players are set to hit the ice at NHL training camps after all 32 clubs released their rosters over the past week. Most camps opened earlier today, launching preparations for the preseason, which officially begins Saturday, Sept. 20.

Colorado leads all NHL clubs with four Cornell representatives: defensemen Hank Kempf '25, Jacob MacDonald '15, Sam Malinski '23, and forward Matt Stienburg '23. Malinski appeared in 76 games with the Avalanche last season, posting 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) and adding an assist in five playoff games. Stienburg played eight NHL games in October before missing four months due to injury, finishing with 16 total appearances between the regular season and AHL playoffs. Kempf made four regular-season and two playoff appearances with the AHL's Colorado Eagles after having seven points (two goals, five assists) in 36 games in his senior season with Cornell. MacDonald, who underwent hip surgery two weeks ago and is expected to miss 5-6 months, led the Eagles with 55 points (31 goals, 24 assists) in 63 games, setting a new AHL single-season record for goals by a defenseman and earning the league's Eddie Shore Award as its most outstanding defenseman.

Los Angeles features two Cornell alumni: forward Jeff Malott '20 and defenseman Tim Rego '25. Malott posted 51 points (23 goals, 28 assists) in 61 games with the AHL's Ontario Reign before earning a late-season call-up and registering his first NHL point on April 15 against Seattle. Rego appeared in five games with the ECHL's Greenville Swamp Rabbits on an amateur tryout contract (ATO) after his 24-point season (eight goals, 16 assists) with Cornell.

Boston's camp will feature Dalton Bancroft, who tallied 27 points (15 goals, 12 assists) in 36 games for the Big Red and played in five games with the AHL's Providence Bruins. Gabriel Seger '24 joins Detroit after a 61-game season split between Grand Rapids (AHL) and Toledo (ECHL), where he combined for 20 points (11 goals, nine assists). Jack Malone '23 heads to New Jersey after recording 13 points (nine goals, four assists) in 57 games with the AHL's Utica Comets. Travis Mitchell '23 will skate with the New York Islanders after posting 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in 65 games with the AHL's Bridgeport Islanders. Sullivan Mack '25 is in camp with the New York Rangers following a 24-point (nine goals, 15 assists) campaign in 32 games for Cornell and playing in one game on an ATO with the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack. Morgan Barron '20 rounds out the group after suiting up in 74 games for Winnipeg, contributing 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) and adding two assists in 13 playoff games with the Jets.

Opening-night rosters for all 32 NHL teams are due Monday, Oct. 6, ahead of the start of the regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
