ITHACA, N.Y. - The no. 24-ranked Cornell men's soccer team defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Berman Field. The Big Red improved to 4-1-0, while the Highlanders moved to 2-4-2 on the season.
Connor Miller,
Westin Carnevale, and
Kasper Wollstein scored Big Red goals in the contest.
Aidan Martin, Carnevale, and
Sergio Zapata were credited with assists.
Ryan Friedberg notched a save, and preserved his fourth shutout of the season to move to 18 career clean-sheets which puts him tied for first-place in the Big Red record book with Jon Ross '74.
"Ryan has been incredible since he arrived here. For him to break the all-time career shutout record today added another fantastic accolade to a great college career so far."Â the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer mentioned.
NJIT held a tight on the scoreboard in the first half although the Big Red were putting shots toward Highlander net-minder Devin Armstrong. Cornell produced 12 shots in the first frame, with five on those going on net. "I thought we did a very good job of staying patient today. Their goalkeeper was outstanding and really did a good job of keeping them in the game.", Smith added.
The Big Red made its opportunities count in the second half. Miller got Cornell on the board in the 49th-minute, putting on home on a feed from Martin and Carnevale. Later in the stanza, Wollstein found room to add insurance in the 83rd-minute. As the game approached closing, Carnevale was presented with a chance he couldn't let up to extend Cornell's advantage to 3-0.
Friedberg earned his fourth clean-sheet of the year, and improved to 4-1-0 between the pipes. "It's great to come away with three goals and a clean sheet. Now we look forward to opening up the Ivy League slate next week when we welcome Yale.", Smith concluded with.

The Cornell men's soccer team will begin Ivy League play, as it will visit the Yale Bulldogs on Saturday, September 27. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Berman Field.
