Zapata Nets A Pair, Big Red Tops Yale For The First Time Since 2015

ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell men's soccer team defeated the Yale Bulldogs 3-1 at Berman Field on Saturday afternoon. The Big Red improved to 5-1-0 on the year, while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-6-2 on the season.

With the victory, Cornell defeated Yale for the first time since 2015. "It was great to start the Ivy League slate with a strong win, especially against a team which has caused us trouble in the past." John Smith, the Dr. Daniel P. Wood Head Coach of Men's Soccer mentioned.

The production off of the bench for Cornell was vital in this contest, with all three goals coming from reserves. Sergio Zapata (two) and Blake Donahue scored the goals for the Big Red. Adam Schaban, Connor Miller, and Aidan Martin were credited with assists in the game.

"I thought the subs came on and did a fantastic job in every facet of the game. They defended well and went at them with pace and intent, and it led to two very good goals." Smith said.

The Bulldogs opened the game with energy, which led to a Yale goal in the 27th minute when Andrew Myreson found pay-dirt. The Big Red responded, when Donahue and Zapata potted a pair of goals respectively in less than two minutes.

Zapata opened up the second-half on the right foot, scoring his second Big Red goal of the day in the 48th minute. "Coming out in the second half was more of a continual wave of attacks which has been a staple of our game over the years, and we deservedly got the third.", Smith added.

Friedberg kept the game at bay, managing three saves in the contest to push Cornell to it's first Ivy League win of the year. He improved to 5-1-0 between the pipes on the season. "We now look forward to another great game against Binghamton on Tuesday.", Smith concluded with.
