Fernandes Stays Unbeaten as Cornell Impresses at Yale Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Junior Rodrigo Fernandes continued his dominant start to the season with three more singles victories to lead the Cornell men's tennis team at the Yale Invitational this past weekend at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.

Fernandes improved to 6-0 in singles play on the year after posting straight-set wins over Princeton's Evan Wen, Yale's Jim Ji and Princeton's Aleksandar Mitric. He also added two doubles victories with classmate Felipe Pinzon, as the duo defeated pairs from Princeton and Yale before falling to Princeton's Mitric and Meecah Bigun on the final day.

Pinzon and senior Aman Sharma each earned singles wins on the opening day, with Pinzon outlasting Princeton's Milan Markovits in three sets and Sharma cruising past Sawyer Severance in straight sets. Sharma teamed with Rushil Khosla for a doubles win against Columbia's Aditya Govila and Severance, while Khosla dropped his lone singles match to Govila due to retirement.

"Overall, it was a very successful weekend," said assistant coach Spencer Furman. "At this stage of the season, our focus is on growth - identifying areas where we can improve and making steady progress. This tournament reinforced that we're heading in the right direction and continuing to take important steps forward."

Cornell closed the three-day event with six singles victories and four doubles wins against Ivy League opponents Princeton, Yale and Columbia.

The Big Red will compete at the Penn State's Holmes Cathrall Memorial Invitational from Oct. 3-5 at the Sarni Tennis Center.
