ITHACA, N.Y. — Following its dominant weekend sweep of Alaska, the 14th-ranked Cornell men's ice hockey team had three Big Red student-athletes recognized for their performances with ECAC Hockey weekly honors, the conference office announced Monday morning.
Junior forward
Jonathan Castagna was named Laurel Lake Placid Forward of the Week, junior defenseman
Hoyt Stanley earned ADAPT Nutrition Defender of the Week honors, and freshman forward
Caton Ryan received Rookie of the Week distinctions.
Castagna powered Cornell's offense with four points on the weekend, including a pair of goals in Saturday's 5-2 victory. The Etobicoke, Ontario, native scored the game-winning goal late in the third period and added a short-handed empty-net tally to seal the win. He added two assists in Friday's 7-1 triumph.
The weekly honor comes during a torrid stretch for Castagna, who has extended his career-long point streak to six games with 11 points (5-6—11). He has recorded 15 of his 17 points this season (7-8—15) over his last 10 games, tallying a point in nine of those contests.
Castagna's short-handed goal on Saturday made him the first Cornell player with three short-handed goals in a season since Mike Iggulden '05 (four) in 2004-05. He became just the fifth Big Red player since 1980-81 with at least three short-handed goals in a season, joining Randy MacFarlane '85 (three in 1984-85), Doug Derraugh '91 (three in 1990-91), Brad Chartrand '96 (three in 1995-96) and Iggulden.
Beyond his scoring prowess, Castagna dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 70.8 percent of his draws (34-for-48), which ranked fourth among players with at least 20 faceoff wins. He matched his season high with 17 faceoff victories in Saturday's game.
Stanley led all Division I defensemen with five assists over the weekend, helping Cornell outscore Alaska 12-3 in the two-game series. The blueliner from West Vancouver, British Columbia, recorded a career-high three helpers in Friday's win and added two more assists in Saturday's victory.
Both Stanley and Castagna were two of four players in ECAC Hockey to record multiple multi-point performances on the weekend, joining Clarkson's Ryan Bottrill and Princeton's Jaxson Ezman.
In addition to his offensive contributions, Stanley was a force defensively, blocking five shots over the two games — tied for the fourth-highest total in ECAC Hockey.
Ryan enjoyed a spectacular weekend with five points (2-3—5), tying him with Bottrill and Stanley for the most points in ECAC Hockey. His total also matched Michigan State's Porter Martone for the most points by a freshman nationally this past week.
The Ottawa, Ontario, product scored twice and added three assists, highlighted by his four-point night in Friday's victory and tallied an assist on Castagna's game-winner Saturday. Ryan has found his scoring touch recently, having points in each of his last five games, totaling 10 points (3-7—10) during that span.
His current run represents the longest point streak by a Cornell freshman since former defenseman
Ben Robertson opened his collegiate career with points in his first seven games in 2023-24. It's the longest by a Big Red freshman forward since
Nick DeSantis recorded a six-game point streak in 2022-23.
Remarkably, Ryan has recorded assists in each game during his point streak — the longest assist streak by a Cornell skater since Robertson had helpers in his first seven career games. The last forward to accomplish the feat was Gabriel Seger '24, who had assists in six consecutive games between Dec. 3, 2022, and Jan. 14, 2023.
The Big Red, winners of its last five, will look to continue its strong play when it returns to ECAC Hockey this weekend with a pair of ranked opponents in No. 20 Princeton (11-5-0, 7-3-0 ECAC Hockey) and No. 8 Quinnipiac (16-4-2, 8-2-0 ECAC Hockey) to continue Cornell's program-record eight-game homestand. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+. Saturday's game against Quinnipiac will also air regionally on SNY.
