ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell women's indoor track and field team continued a strong start to the season Saturday, turning in multiple school-record performances at the Upstate Challenge inside Barton Hall.
The meet marked Cornell's third competition of the indoor season and its third consecutive home meet, with the Big Red competing against Syracuse, Colgate, Binghamton and Guelph (Ontario, Canada).
Cornell delivered a banner day across the sprints, throws and vaults, tying and breaking several program marks. Francine Stevens tied the Cornell school record in the 300 meters, winning the event in 38.81 seconds. Natasha Redmond also etched her name into the record books in the same race, clocking 39.81 to rank 10th all-time at Cornell.
In the field events, Avery Hilliard claimed sole possession of the top spot in school history in the pole vault, clearing 14 feet, 1.25 inches to set a new Cornell record. The throws group also impressed, led by Avery Hastings, who tied for fifth all-time in the weight throw with a mark of 59 feet, 5 inches. Gabriella Vizcarrondo followed closely, moving into 10th place on Cornell's all-time list with a throw of 56 feet, 10.75 inches.
Claire Springer added another record-book performance in the shot put, recording a personal-best throw of 14.28 meters to rank ninth in program history.
On the track, Sophia Comfere turned in a standout effort in the 600 meters, finishing in 1:33.90 to move into eighth place on Cornell's all-time list.
Cornell will return to action Jan. 23–24 at the Dr. Sander Scorcher Meet in New York City.
