Men's Swim and Dive Falls To Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Cornell men's swimming and diving team fell to Columbia 203–97 on Saturday afternoon at Percy Uris Natatorium.

The Big Red opened the meet on the boards, where Max Trovillion placed second on the 3-meter with a score of 314.18, followed closely by William Klingensmith in third (307.35). Cornell again claimed second and third on the 1-meter, with Trovillion (316.13) and Klingensmith (305.85) finishing just behind Columbia's Joseph Nicol.

Cornell picked up several individual wins. Haihan Xu captured the 100-yard breaststroke in 53.78, edging Columbia by just five-hundredths of a second, and later added a runner-up finish in the 200 breaststroke (1:57.76). Pietro Ubertalli delivered a standout performance in the backstroke events, winning the 200-yard backstroke in 1:44.72 and finishing third in the 200 freestyle (1:37.95).

Cornell also showed strength in the butterfly events. Jacques Grove placed third in both the 200 butterfly (1:48.15) and the 100 butterfly (48.41), while Andrew Lin and Leo Cerda added scoring swims in each race.

In sprint freestyle action, Josh Toothman took second in the 50 free (20.21), while Daniel Simoes finished second in the 100 free (44.75). Cornell's depth showed in the distance events as well, with Julian Correa placing third in the 1000 freestyle (9:18.19) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (4:32.87).

The Big Red closed the meet with a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the quartet of Ubertalli, Simoes, Toothman, and Grove touched in 2:57.65.

The Cornell men's swimming and diving team will return to Teagle Pool on Friday, January 30th for day one of a two-day meet against Ivy foe Brown. The Big Red and the Bears will begin diving competition at 5:00 p.m. on Friday evening, and swimming competition at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
