Hinton's Big Plays, Second-Half Run Lifts Men's Hoops to 86-79 Win At Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Senior Adam Hinton scored a game-high 27 points, capped by a go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute and a steal on the ensuing possession, as the Cornell men's basketball team rallied from a 16-point first-half deficit to defeat Harvard 86-79 on Saturday afternoon at Lavietes Pavilion. The Big Red improved to 9-9 (2-3 Ivy), while the Crimson slipped to 10-9 (3-2 Ivy).

Hinton finished 9-of-16 from the field and 6-of-9 from beyond the arc, adding three free throws in the final 36 seconds to seal the win. His final 3-pointer from the corner at the 0:49 mark hit every part of the rim before falling in and snapped a 79-78 Harvard lead, and his steal moments later led to two more points at the line. He added five rebounds, an assist, a blocked shot and a steal in the triumph.

Senior Cooper Noard added 19 points for Cornell, while classmate Jake Fiegen chipped in 15 points, four assists and four rebounds. Senior Josh Baldwin scored eight points and sophomore Anthony Nimani added six off the bench as Cornell shot .682 in the second half and .529 for the game. The team connected on 11 3-pointers and assisted on 18 baskets to just 11 turnovers in the victory. Junior Kaspar Sepp had a game-high nine rebounds and posted four assists as the Big Red held a 30-27 edge on the backboards.

Harvard was led by Adam's brother, Robert, who had 19 points, while Tey Barbour netted 18. Thomas Batties II added 14 points, but the Crimson were held to .375 shooting after halftime as Cornell's defense tightened. Ben Eisendrath scored 11 points with six assists and four steals and Frankie Mannino also had 11 to round out five double-figure scorers.

The Big Red erased a 41-25 hole late in the first half and used an 18-0 run early in the second half to go ahead, earning its second straight road victory in Ivy League play. The 16-point deficit is tied for the fourth-largest overcome in a Big Red victory this century and ties its largest on the road during that span.

Cornell trailed 44-36 at the break after Cornell clawed back within striking distance. Harvard shot nearly 55 percent in the opening 20 minutes, but the momentum flipped quickly after halftime. Adam Hinton buried a 3-pointer with one second left in the first half and followed with another early in the second as Cornell opened the period on a decisive run that turned a deficit into a lead.

The Big Red closed the game by hitting 21-of-26 free throws and forcing key turnovers down the stretch to complete the comeback and hand Harvard just its second home loss of the season.
