NEW YORK, N.Y. - Cornell women's basketball snapped a trio of losing streaks Saturday afternoon with its 67-60 win over Columbia, earning its first win in five games to improve to 5-8 overall and 1-0 in Ivy League action, while defeating Columbia for the first time in eight games and earning its first road win over the Lions since 2018.
Emily Pape, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Week, finished with 19 points with four 3-pointers, followed by junior
Rachel Kaus with 15 and
Clarke Jackson and
Audrey Chen with 12 apiece. Jackson led the team with seven rebounds and seven assists, while Pape and Kaus added six and five boards, respectively.
As a team, Cornell shot 45.1 percent from the field and 52.6 percent from 3-point land, getting 18 points from its reserves, 17 off turnovers and another 10 on second chances.
Columbia (9-5, 0-1 Ivy) was led by Perri Page who finished with a game-best 24 points, going 11-for-15 from the floor. Marija Avlijas and Fliss Henderson added 13 and 11, respectively. Henderson also grabbed 16 rebounds for the double-double. The Lions shot 41.4 percent from the floor, including 25.0 percent from the perimeter.
Cornell and Columbia would go blow-for-blow in the first half, with the Big Red taking a narrow 28-26 lead into the break. It was the Cornell defense that helped the Big Red take an early 10-5 lead in the first quarter as the 8-0 run for the visitors was aided by a 5:32 scoreless stretch for the Lions.
Columbia would get out of its slump and take an 11-10 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter began with a 10-4 run by the Big Red that featured two 3-pointers from
Audrey Chen, and baskets from
Clarke Jackson and freshman
Grace Renners, giving Cornell its largest lead of the first half, 20-15. Columbia would once again answer, tying the game at 22-22, three and half minutes later, before Cornell went on to take its two-point lead into the locker rooms.
Cornell was sparked by 12 first-half points from its reserves, and eight points off nine Columbia turnovers.
Columbia scored six unanswered in less than a minute to take a 35-33 lead over Cornell at the 5:59 mark of the third, however, Pape would knock down her third triple of the game and second of the quarter, giving Cornell back the lead, 36-35. From there, Cornell outscored Columbia 10-4 over the final 5:22 of the third quarter, taking a 46-39 lead into the final stanza.
Kelsey Langston made her first and only 3-pointer of the game to start the fourth and Pape made her fourth and final three moments later, giving Cornell its largest lead to that point in the contest as a few minutes later, the Big Red once again made back-to-back triples, this time from Kaus and Chen to go up by 12, 60-48.
Columbia would chip away at the Cornell lead over the final three and a half minutes, but the Big Red held on, making three at the line in the final 10 seconds to seal the seven-point victory.

• Pape reached double figures for the 52nd time in her career and seventh time this season. • Kaus reached double-digits in the scoring column for the 31st time in her career and 10th time this season.
• Jackson recorded double figures for the sixth time this season and 16th time in her career, while Chen reached double-digits for the second time in her career, both of which came this season.
• Jackson set a career-best with seven assists and matched her season-high with seven rebounds.
