Big Red End 16-Game Losing Streak to Penn, Win 62-58

PHILADELPHIA - Cornell women's basketball ended a 16-game losing streak to Penn with a 62-58 win over the Quakers Friday night at the Palestra, using a strong start to hold off a Penn comeback attempt. The Big Red improved to 8-11 overall and 3-3 in Ivy League play, while Penn moved to 12-7 overall and 2-4 in conference action.

Senior Emily Pape led the way for the Big Red, scoring 20 points, going 8-for-15 from the floor and 4-for-10 from three while adding five rebounds and three assists. Junior Rachel Kaus chipped in 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting and 5-for-6 from the free throw line while fellow junior Clarke Jackson chipped in nine points to go with a team-best nine rebounds. Sophomore Kelsey Langston finished with five assists and six points. As a team, Cornell finished the game shooting 48.0 percent from the field, including 47.1 percent from three.

Penn's Mataya Gayle had 20 points, finishing as the team's leading scorer while shooting 50.0 percent from the field and knocking down four threes. Katie Collins registered a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. The Quakers went 23-for-63 from the field for the contest and got the edge on the glass, 35-34.

Cornell got off to a fast start, making baskets on its first two trips down the floor to take a quick 5-0 lead before Penn responded with a 9-0 run to take its only lead of the contest, 9-5, at the 6:50 mark of the first. The lead didn't last long as the Big Red rattled off seven straight points, retaking the lead 12-9, one it would not relinquish.

The Big Red ended the first on a 16-5 run to take a 21-14 advantage into the second.

Penn drew within four in the second, holding Cornell to three points in the opening four-plus minutes of the quarter. From there, the Big Red outscored Penn 14-11, going into the half with a 38-31 lead.

Cornell didn't cool down to start the second half, starting the third quarter on a 9-0 run and building its lead to a game-best 47-31. Kaus scored six of the team's nine during the strong start to the half.

Penn, however, wouldn't go away quietly, ending the third on a 12-0 run, holding Cornell scoreless for nearly seven minutes and going into the fourth with the Big Red ahead by four, 47-43.

The Quakers would continue to chip into the Cornell lead in the fourth quarter, making it a 55-54 game with 1:39 remaining. However, on the following possession, Langston would hit a three, giving Cornell a 58-54 lead with 1:18 to go.

Cornell iced the game at the line, going 4-for-4, to keep Penn out of reach.
