Cornell Men Place Second at Cornell Invite on Senior Night

| By:

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell men's indoor track and field team finished second at the Cornell Invite on Saturday at Barton Hall, narrowly trailing UAlbany in a rare scored meet that also served as Senior Night.

Cornell tallied 151 points, just behind UAlbany's 155. Queen's University finished third with 43 points, followed by Colgate (18), Syracuse (14) and Binghamton (8).

The scored meet format, uncommon during the regular indoor season, brought a competitive team-championship atmosphere to Barton Hall, drawing squads from the Northeast and Canada for a full day of track and field action.

Cornell's men turned in a number of strong individual performances to fuel their runner-up finish. One of the meet's standouts was Peter Northrup, who surpassed the 20-meter mark in the weight throw for the first time this season, launching the implement 20.05 meters, a personal milestone in the event.

On the track, the Big Red saw competitive finishes across sprints and distance events. In the men's 60 meters, several Big Red sprinters placed within striking range of the top spots, contributing to the team's point total. Meanwhile, Cornell's performances in the 400 meters and 800 meters kept the team close in the scoring battle throughout the afternoon.

Cornell also posted scoring marks in field events including the long jump and pole vault, where multiple Big Red athletes advanced to finals and earned points.

Assistant coach Kayla Evans said the meet delivered exciting competition.

"Oh, today was an exciting set of competitions in Barton Hall. It featured the return of a scored meet — it's not something that we have very often in track and field during the regular season," Evans said. "We invited some visiting teams that don't compete against us frequently… and they put up a really great battle. They just eked out ahead of us on the men's side for team scoring." Evans added that there were "lots of really fantastic battles across the board," and highlighted Northrup's performance in the weight throw as a major achievement.

Despite falling just short of first, Cornell's men showcased depth and individual highlights on Senior Night, setting a positive tone as the indoor season progresses.

Up next, the Big Red will head to University Park, PA to compete in the Sykes and Sabock Challenge on Saturday, February 7.
