Cornell Women Win Team Title at Cornell Invite on Senior Night

| By:

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell women's indoor track and field team captured the team title at the Cornell Invite on Saturday at Barton Hall, totaling 174 points in a rare scored meet on Senior Night.

Cornell finished comfortably ahead of second-place UAlbany (125 points), followed by Binghamton in third (45), Queen's University of Ontario in fourth (32), Syracuse in fifth (30), SUNY Delhi in sixth (8) and Colgate in seventh (7).

Scored meets are uncommon during the regular indoor season, adding a championship-style atmosphere to the competition. The field featured Cornell as host alongside UAlbany, Queen's University, Colgate, Syracuse, Binghamton and SUNY Delhi.

Cornell athletes delivered strong individual performances across sprints, middle distance and field events to fuel the team's victory. In the women's 60 meters, Olivia Walters placed third and Skyy Johnson finished fourth, contributing key points early in the meet.

Johnson then took first in the 200 meters to highlight Cornell's sprint depth.

In the 400 meters, Sophia Comfere claimed the win for the Big Red, with Justine Hounsell and Katja Jackson also scoring valuable team points in that race.

The women's competition was highlighted by junior Avery Hilliard, who broke her own Cornell school record in the pole vault, clearing 4.36 meters. Hilliard's vault not only secured first in the event but also moved her up in the national rankings — currently eighth in the NCAA — and kept her on pace toward qualifying for the Indoor NCAA Championships.

Assistant coach Kayla Evans noted the significance of the meet format and the performances it produced.

"It was exciting to have a scored meet back in Barton Hall," Evans said. "Those environments bring out great battles, and our women really rose to the occasion."

The victory capped a successful Senior Night for the Big Red, as Cornell delivered strong performances across the board to secure the team win on its home track.

Up next, the team will head to University Park, PA to compete in the Sykes and Sabock Challenge on Saturday, February 7.
