ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell men's hockey freshman forward
Aiden Long has been named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon, following a breakout weekend at Lynah Rink.
Long helped propel the Big Red to a weekend sweep of visiting Omaha, earning 6-4 and 3-2 victories to open the program's record eight-game homestand and improve Cornell's overall record to 9-4-0.
The freshman recorded the first three goals of his collegiate career during the two-game series against the Mavericks, finishing the weekend with three goals and one assist. Through his first 13 collegiate games, Long owns eight points (three goals, five assists) and has accounted for five of those points (three goals, two assists) during his current three-game point streak.
One of just five players across ECAC Hockey to record multiple multi-point games over the weekend, Long was the only freshman to accomplish the feat. His three goals tied him with Princeton's David Jacobs and Quinnipiac's Victor Czerneckianair for the conference lead, while his four points were tied for fourth in the league alongside Czerneckianair and fellow Quinnipiac forward Mason Marcellus.
In Friday night's series opener, Long scored twice, including a crucial empty-net goal late in the third period to secure Cornell's 6-4 victory. His first tally capped a stretch of three unanswered goals by the Big Red in the opening 10 minutes of play. Long continued his hot streak Saturday, scoring Cornell's second goal midway through the first period of the 3-2 win. He also added a secondary assist on junior forward
Jonathan Castagna's game-winning goal early in the third period.
Cornell's recent success has mirrored Long's emergence, as the Big Red has won each of its last three games during his current point streak, outscoring opponents 16-8 over that span. Cornell has also won its last eight home games, including the first six this season, tying Princeton for the longest home winning streak in Division I hockey.
The 17th-ranked Big Red will continue its program-record eight-game homestand this weekend when it welcomes Alaska (5-11-1) to Lynah Rink. Both games against the Nanooks are scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Alaska will be visiting Lynah Rink for just the second time in program history and for the first time since the 2021–22 season, when Cornell opened the campaign with a pair of overtime victories over the Nanooks, 3-2 and 1-0.
