ITHACA, N.Y. — Senior goaltender Annelies Bergmann stopped all 27 shots she faced to tie the Cornell career record with her 22nd shutout, and junior defenseman Rose Dwyer scored on a two-man advantage early in the third period as No. 14 Cornell beat No. 15 Vermont, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink.
Bergmann, a Detroit native, matched Amanda Mazzotta (2008-11) for the most career shutouts in program history. She has allowed two goals in two starts this season, stopping 42 of 44 shots as Cornell (2-0-0) swept the weekend series. Vermont fell to 3-3-0.
Neither team scored through two periods. Bergmann made 12 saves in the second, when Vermont outshot the Big Red 12-11, and Vermont's Tara Bach answered with 11 of her own. The Big Red killed all three Vermont power plays, two of them in the middle period.
The breakthrough came at 7:46 of the third. Vermont's Lila Pannacciulli went off for body checking at 6:16, and Josie Hemp followed for cross-checking at 7:11, giving Cornell a 5-on-3 for 65 seconds. The Big Red called a timeout and scored 35 seconds into the two-man advantage. Dwyer finished off a setup from senior defenseman Piper Grober and junior forward Lindzi Avar for her first goal of the season.
Cornell put 19 shots on goal in the third period to Vermont's nine. Bach finished with 37 saves, stopping 18 in the third alone. She was pulled for an extra attacker with 40 seconds left, and Vermont called a timeout with 29 seconds to go, but Bergmann and the Big Red defense held.
Cornell outshot Vermont 38-27 and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Senior forward Karel Prefontaine led all skaters with six shots on goal, while Grober had five shots and four blocked shots. Avar, Dwyer and Delaney Fleming each had four shots on goal. Senior forward Beatrice Perron-Roy won 15 of 20 faceoffs as Cornell took 36 of 60 draws overall.
Grober finished the weekend with two goals and an assist. Dwyer had a goal and an assist across the two games.
Cornell next travels to Chestnut Hill, Mass., to face Boston College, which is receiving votes in the national poll, on Friday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 24, at 3 p.m.
