PRINCETON, N.J. — Sophomore
Rethin Pranav Senthil Kumar won twice Sunday to reach the singles final of the Ivy League Invitational Automatic Qualifier, putting the Cornell men's tennis player one win from the Ivy League's bid to the ITA Conference Masters Championships.
Senthil Kumar, the No. 2 seed, meets Penn's third-seeded Shaurya Bharadwaj in Monday's championship match. The winner advances to the Conference Masters, Nov. 5-8 at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga. A semifinal run there would earn a spot in the NCAA Singles Championships, where junior
Rodrigo Fernandes is already headed.
Senthil Kumar opened the day with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 quarterfinal win over Penn's Vojtech Vales. He then beat Penn's Callum Markowitz, 6-3, 7-6 (6), in the semifinals, again holding on in a second-set tiebreak. Markowitz had knocked off two seeds to get there: fourth-seeded Nathan Blokhin of Harvard in three sets in the round of 16, and seventh-seeded Aleksandar Mitric of Princeton, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, in Sunday's quarterfinals. Senthil Kumar has not dropped a set in four matches at the event, a year after he exited in the round of 32.
Bharadwaj also won twice in straight sets Sunday, upsetting top-seeded Simeon Stankovic of Princeton, 7-6 (4), 6-1, in the semifinals.
Senthil Kumar and Bharadwaj play for the title Monday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. The match will be streamed on IvyLeague.tv.
