WASHINGTON, D.C. –
Garrett Bass-Sulpizio accounted for a career-high four touchdowns, two passing and two rushing, to lead Cornell to its second straight win, a 35-14 decision over Georgetown in the nation's capital on Saturday.
Cornell (2-1) scored on its first two possessions of each half plus its first possession of the fourth quarter. The Big Red opened the scoring when Bass-Sulpizio threw a screen pass to
Brendan Lee, who turned and threw downfield to
Ty Doughty for a 33-yard touchdown, capping a 70-yard, nine-play drive. Cornell struck again on its next possession, driving 80 yards in eight plays before Bass-Sulpizio punched one in from a yard out to make it 14-0 with 1:31 left in the first quarter.
Georgetown (0-4) got on the board in the second quarter when Jack Johnson found Jonathan Alexander for a 40-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 14-7 at the half.
Cornell opened the third quarter with back-to-back scoring drives, both finished by Bass-Sulpizio touchdown passes to
Samuel Musungu, a 9-yarder and a 30-yarder, to make it 28-7. On Cornell's first possession of the fourth quarter, Bass-Sulpizio added his second rushing score of the day, a 4-yard run, to extend the lead to 35-7. Georgetown answered with a 10-play, 64-yard drive finished by a 1-yard Clay Ash touchdown run, but Cornell closed out the win from there.
Bass-Sulpizio finished 20 of 27 passing for 279 yards and two touchdowns, adding 35 rushing yards and two more scores on the ground for four total touchdowns on the day, a career-high for the San Diego product. Musungu caught six passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns, and Lee added five catches for 86 yards to go with his touchdown pass.
Jordan Triplett led Cornell on the ground with 75 yards on 13 carries.
The Big Red defense recorded five sacks, the most by a Cornell defense in 13 games (at Dartmouth, Nov. 16, 2024) and forced a Georgetown turnover on downs twice in the red zone.
Nolin Thompson,
Johnny Williamson,
Saeed Moghaddam Adames,
Tommy Ducker and
Dalten Phelan each had at least a half sack, and
Braylon James intercepted a pass.
Ian Wall and
Johnny Williamson lead the team with seven tackles each.
Georgetown rotated quarterbacks Jack Johnson and Gavin Beard, who combined to throw for 252 yards, but the Hoyas were held to 90 rushing yards on 37 carries and converted just one of three red-zone trips into points.
Cornell returns home to host Harvard on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ from Schoellkopf Field.
