Beyond the Box Score: The Georgetown Game

| By:
ITHACA, N.Y. - Cornell defeated Georgetown on the road, 35-14, and the Big Red's record book got a workout — here's what stood out beyond the final score.

TEAM NOTES

  • Cornell improved to 2-1 on the season with a 35-14 win over Georgetown and is now 664-568-34 all-time.
  • The Big Red are 2-1 through its first three games for the first time since 2023. Cornell has not won back-to-back games after losing its opener since 2012.
  • Cornell's defense racked up five sacks on the day, its first five-sack game since a five-sack effort against Dartmouth on Nov. 16, 2024.
  • Cornell had 493 yards of total offense on just 61 plays, an average of 8.1 yards per play.
  • The Big Red defense has recorded an interception in each of its first three games of the season for the first time since 2023.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • Senior quarterback Garrett Bass-Sulpizio was 20 of 27 for 279 yards and two touchdowns through the air, adding 35 yards and two more scores on the ground for a career-high four total touchdowns — his previous best was three, done twice last season.
  • Bass-Sulpizio is just the second Cornell quarterback to throw two touchdown passes and run for two more in the same game, joining Nathan Ford, who did it against Colgate on Oct. 14, 2006.
  • Senior wide receiver Samuel Musungu caught six passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns, marking the first time since he scored 3 vs. Penn on Nov. 9, 2024 that a member of the Big Red offense has recorded multiple touchdown catches in the same game.
  • Senior wide-out Brendan Lee completed a 33-yard touchdown pass to Ty Doughty, the first touchdown pass thrown by a non-quarterback since Ben Rogers hit Chris Walker for a score against Penn in 2016
  • Senior safety Johnny Williamson led the defense with eight tackles, adding a sack and a pass breakup. His season total is now up to 24 and his career total up to 92. The senior needs eight more tackles to become the 147th player on program history with 100 career tackles.
  • Sophomore safety Braylon James delivered Cornell's only takeaway of the game, intercepting Georgetown quarterback Jack Johnson, to go with six tackles and a tackle for loss. It was James' first career interception.
  • Junior punter Caden Lesiewicz averaged 43.5 yards on two punts, with a long of 45.
