Penn Completes Season Sweep of Men's Hoops With 82-76 Win

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Cornell men's basketball team placed six in double figures, but it was Penn that was able to close out the season sweep with an 82-76 victory on Saturday evening at the Palestra. Cornell fell to 12-11 (5-5 Ivy), while the Quakers improved to 13-10 (6-4 Ivy).

Senior Jake Fiegen led the Big Red with 17 points and eight rebounds, while classmate Cooper Noard added 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Adam Hinton, Jacob Beccles, Josh Baldwin and Kaspar Sepp each scored 10 points for Cornell, which shot .476 from the field, but couldn't overcome 16 turnovers, a 10-of-21 effort at the free-throw line and a 6-of-23 shooting effort from the 3-point arc. Hinton added seven boards and Sepp had eight as Cornell owned a 41-40 edge on the glass against the bigger Quakers.

Freshman Jay Jones scored 17 points and Penn capitalized at the free-throw line down the stretch, going 22-of-32 from the stripe in the second half and finishing 27-of-41 for the game. TJ Power scored 17 points with eight rebounds, Jones added his 17 off the bench, AJ Levine had 16 points and five steals and Ethan Roberts chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds.

Penn used a late first-half push to seize control. With the score tied at 26-26, the Quakers closed the final 2:26 on a 10-5 run, capped by Power's jumper at the buzzer, to take a 36-31 lead into the locker room.

Cornell briefly grabbed momentum early in the second half. Noard opened the period with a 3-pointer, and the Big Red stayed within one possession before Penn responded with a decisive surge midway through the half.

Leading 53-50, the Quakers strung together a 6-0 burst and then extended the margin to nine on a fast-break dunk by Lucas-Allan Lueth with 9:35 remaining, forcing a Cornell timeout. Penn scored 21 fast-break points and converted the Cornell turnovers into 23 points.

The Big Red cut the deficit to five on Fiegen's 3-pointer with 4:23 to play, but Penn answered at the line. A pair of free throws by AJ Levine and multiple late conversions from Jones kept Cornell from drawing closer than six in the final minute.

Cornell outscored Penn 48-44 in the paint and held a 16-11 edge in second-chance points but struggled at the foul line, going 5-of-13 in the second half.
