ITHACA, N.Y. -- No. 26 Cornell rebounded from dropping the doubles point to defeat Tulsa 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in men's tennis action at the Reis Tennis Center. The Big Red improved to 7-2, while Tulsa fell to 8-7.
Tulsa claimed the doubles point despite a strong start from Cornell's top pairing. The 51st-ranked duo of Eric Verdes and Rodrigo Fernandes earned a 6-2 win at No. 1, but the Hurricane answered with victories at Nos. 2 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead.
Cornell responded emphatically in singles, winning four matches in straight sets to secure the team victory.
At the top of the lineup, 63rd-ranked Fernandes delivered a steady 6-4, 6-4 win over Nikita Volonski to even the match in the top spot on the ladder. Rethin Pranav Senthil Kumar gave the Big Red the lead with a dominant 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 5, and Felipe Pinzon followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4.
The clinching point came from Petar Teodorovic, who closed out Takeshi Taco 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 to seal Cornell's seventh win of the season.
Tulsa picked up a win at No. 6, and the No. 2 singles match was left unfinished once the outcome had been decided.
The Big Red will next play a couple of key non-conference contests in Virginia when it travels south to face VCU on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 11 a.m., followed by Old Dominion on Sunday, March 1 at 10 a.m.
