RICHMOND, Va. -- The 25th-ranked Cornell men's tennis team continued its strong spring campaign with a 4-1 victory over VCU on Saturday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. The Big Red improved to 8-2, while VCU fell to 4-6.
Cornell took control early by sweeping the completed doubles matches to secure the opening point. The 72nd-ranked tandem of Rushil Khosla and Rethin Pranav Senthil Kumar set the tone with a 6-2 win at No. 2, and the 51st-ranked duo of Rodrigo Fernandes and Eric Verdes followed with a 6-3 victory at No. 1. The No. 3 match went unfinished.
In singles play, Cornell earned three key victories to clinch the match.
At No. 6, Aman Sharma extended the lead with a 6-4, 6-3 straight sets win over Patrik Petera. After VCU picked up its lone point at No. 4, where Gevorg Mnatsakanyan rallied past Felipe Pinzon in three sets, the Big Red responded decisively.
Fernandes, ranked 63rd nationally in singles, delivered a clutch performance at the top spot, edging Mats Bredschneijder in two tight sets, 7-6, 7-6, to push Cornell within one point of victory. The clincher came at No. 2, where Verdes rebounded from a first-set loss to defeat Nicolo Consonni 2-6, 6-2, 7-5, sealing Cornell's eighth win of the season.
Matches at Nos. 3 and 5 were left unfinished once the outcome was decided.
The Big Red will look to complete the weekend sweep in Virginia when it visits No. 63 Old Dominion on Sunday, March 1 at 10 a.m. in Norfolk.
