Big Red Splits Frost Classic Day Two Doubleheader

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Cornell softball team picked up a split against the University of Illinois Chicagoand Chattanooga on day two of the Frost Classic on Saturday evening. In the first game of the day, the Big Red defeated UIC 5-4. Cornell dropped a 2-1 contest in eight innings to Chattanooga in the second game of the doubleheader.

Lauren Holt powered the Big Red through day two of the Frost Classic, registering four hits with two RBI and a run of her own. Charlize Cai continued a strong weekend, grabbing three hits and two runs.

Madalyn Covelli picked up her second win of the weekend, striking out five batters and allowing zero earned runs throughout 6.1 innings. Mila Fiordalisi and Emma Harshberger split action in the setback against UIC. Harshberger allowed one earned run through 3.1 innings, while Fiordalisi struck out one batter and allowed one run through 4.1 innings.

UIC jumped out to an early lead in the first inning after Cameran Rios singled to right field to bring in two runs. Trinity Brandhorst followed with a sacrifice fly to score another, and Jordan McCafferty added an RBI single to put the Flames ahead 4-0.

Cornell answered in the third inning. Lauren Holt doubled to left center to bring Ella Harrod home before scoring herself on a wild pitch. Delailah Lopez then doubled to center field to bring in Hailey Pirkey and Susanna Pate, tying the game at 4-4. In the sixth inning, Holt delivered again with an RBI single to score Charlize Cai and give Cornell the lead.

The Big Red held on for the remainder of the game to secure the comeback victory. Madalyn Covelli earned the win, moving to 2-0 on the season, while Jasmine Whorley of UIC was charged with the loss.

Cornell struck first in the opening inning when Charlize Cai scored on a stolen-base sequence by Ella Harrod to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead. Chattanooga answered in the bottom half of the inning as Annika Segedi scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

The game remained scoreless until the eighth inning when Auburn Karls hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to left field to score Jade Gainer and give Chattanooga the win. Emery Bales earned the win in the circle for Chattanooga, while Mila Fiordalisi was charged with her second loss of the season.

Next Up
The Cornell Softball team will return to the diamond tomorrow against UIC to close out the Frost Classic. The Big Red and the Flames will meet at 11:00 a.m. at Frost Stadium.
