ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell women's indoor track and field team capped its regular season schedule with a strong showing Saturday at the Marc Deneault Memorial Invite, highlighted by 10 event victories and a celebration of Black History Month at Barton Hall.
The Big Red women turned in a balanced performance against a 15-team field that included Buffalo, Cortland, Franklin & Marshall, Hamilton, Hartwick, Ithaca College, King's College, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Morrisville State, Oneonta, SUNY Delhi, Scranton and Syracuse.
Junior Takiya Henson led the sprint group, placing third in the 60 meters in 7.70 seconds before returning to win the 200 meters in 24.92. Sophomore Natasha Redmond added a victory in the 400 meters, crossing the line in 58.33.
Cornell dominated the middle-distance and distance events. Sophomore Lucia Werner claimed the 3,000 meters in 10:09.27, while Hannah Kersten finished third in 10:20.76. In the 800 meters, sophomore Kate Fenwick placed second in 2:18.72 and junior Riley Ebersole followed closely in third at 2:18.74.
The 4x400 relay team of Kate Fenwick, Riley Ebersole, Kinga Czajkowska and Angelina George closed the meet with a first-place finish in 4:08.06.
In the 60m hurdles, freshman Arianna Allen took second with a time of 8.51.
Cornell's field athletes also delivered multiple podium sweeps. Sophomore Syna Sony won the high jump at 1.66 meters, with sophomore Johanna Stuard placing second at 1.63 meters. Junior Avery Hilliard claimed first place in pole vault at 4.12 meters, while junior Lauren Cashman finished third at 3.82 meters.
In the horizontal jumps, junior Anika Sukumar won the triple jump with a mark of 12.41 meters and senior Sarah Caldwell placed second at 11.91 meters. Sophomore Elizabeth Graham added a runner-up finish in the long jump at 5.46 meters.
The Big Red controlled the throwing events as well. Senior Nicole Loy won shot put with a throw of 14.60 meters, followed by sophomore Claire Springer (13.56m) and freshman Lauren Smith (13.52m). In the weight throw, junior Avery Hastings claimed first at 18.46 meters, with freshman Gabriella Vizcarrondo (17.73m) and sophomore Torie Jamieson (17.10m) finishing second and third, respectively.
With the home portion of the indoor season complete, Cornell now turns its focus to the championship stretch of the schedule.
