LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Junior Anika Sukumar closed out Cornell's NCAA East First Round competition on Saturday evening, delivering one of the strongest performances of her season in the women's triple jump at the University of Kentucky.
Competing against the top jumpers in the East Region, Sukumar recorded a best mark of 12.41 meters to place 35th overall. Entering the meet tied for the final seed in the field, the Cornell junior outperformed her ranking and finished higher than her pre-meet position.
Sukumar remained composed throughout the competition, piecing together a consistent series of jumps while competing on one of collegiate track and field's biggest stages.
"Anika competed really well," head coach Mike Henderson said. "She came in ranked tied for last and didn't let it phase her. She was calm and confident the whole competition and put together her second-best meet of the season."
Assistant coach Jacky Mendes praised Sukumar's execution and ability to rise to the moment against a highly competitive field.
"Anika had the best put-together horizontal jumps competition of anyone at Cornell since at least 2019," Mendes said. "Today was her second-best competition of the outdoor season and tied for second-best this academic year. The triple jump competition overall was extremely competitive. Anika remained positive, composed and powerful throughout each and every jump. The plan for today was to compete as hard as possible and she absolutely achieved that goal."
Sukumar's performance concludes Cornell's competition at the NCAA East First Round. The Big Red will next turn its attention to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., where Avery Hilliard and Pierre Attiogbe will represent Cornell on the national stage.
