Men's Tennis Hands St. John's First Loss Of Season With 7-0 Sweep

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's tennis team completed a dominant weekend at home Saturday afternoon at Reis Tennis Center, sweeping St. John's 7-0 . The Big Red improved to 4-1 on the season, while St. John's suffered its first loss and fell to 3-1.

Cornell set the tone by quickly securing the doubles point. Eric Verdes and Rodrigo Fernandes opened with a 6-2 win at No. 1, and Felipe Pinzon paired with Petar Teodorovic to earn a 6-4 triumph at No. 3, clinching the early advantage before the No. 2 match was completed.

The Big Red carried that momentum into singles, sweeping all six matches and winning four in straight sets. At the top of the lineup, 40th-ranked Fernandes cruised past David Petrovic 6-1, 6-0. Senior Aman Sharma followed with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6, while freshman Rethin Pranav Senthil Kumar battled through a tight first set to defeat Sergej Zivkovic 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5 to clinch the team victory.

Cornell continued to roll through the middle of the order. Senior Petar Teodorovic earned a straight-set win at No. 3, topping Semen Agynskyy 6-1, 7-6, and junior Eric Verdes outlasted Radomir Tomic 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 at No. 2. The sweep was sealed by Pinzon, who rallied after dropping the opening set to defeat Armando Sotelo 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4.

The Big Red will compete at the 2026 ECAC Championships this coming weekend, with the three-day tournament beginning on Friday, Feb. 13 at Princeton.
