Softball Splits With Merrimack On Final Day of DeMarini Tiger Clash

TOWSON, Md. - The Cornell softball team split games with Merrimack on Saturday to close out competition at the DeMarini Tiger Clash. The Big Red fell 8-4 to the Warriors in first game of the doubleheader. Cornell bounced back with a 4-3 victory in the second game against Merrimack. The Big Red improved to 5-5 on the season, while the Warriors moved to 2-7.

Lauren Holt led the day for Cornell with four RBI paired with three hits and two home runs. In the first game of the doubleheader, Mila Fiordalisi pitched four innings, producing six strikeouts and allowing three earned runs (four total), while Madalyn Covelli took the mound for two innings and struck out three batters and allowed two earned runs (four total). Covelli went seven innings in the second game of the day, striking out five batters and allowing three earned runs in the win.

vs Merrimack - Game One
Holt led the scoring off, hitting as two-run homer in the first-inning to give Cornell a 2-0 lead. Megan Miller matched Holt with a two-run home run of her own for Merrimack to tie the game up at 2-2 in the second-inning. Madeline Arvai singled to the shortstop, sending Alex Miller home to give the Warriors a 3-2 lead.

Miller did more of the same for Merrimack, singling to left center, bringing Kiele Coleman home to extend the lead to 4-2. Merrimack tacked on three runs in the fifth, coming from Jamie Calkins, Dejah Rondeau, and Madi Gibeault (unearned) to add insurance to the advantage. Cai stepped up to the plate for Cornell in the sixth-inning and singled up the middle to send Hailey Pirkey and Susana Pate (unearned) home to bring Cornell closer to the equalizer.

Abby Choquette reached on an error in the sixth, allowing Calkins to score unearned and ultimately put the game out of reach and give Merrimack the victory in the first game of the doubleheader.

vs Merrimack - Game Two
Cornell opened the game with three unanswered runs by Pate and Frans (two) respectively, coming in the second-, third-, and fifth- innings get out to a 3-0 lead over Merrimack. The Warriors used a three-run sixth-inning to bring the game back even when Calkins, Arvai, and Rondeau scored to bring the score to 3-3.

Holt produced her second homer of the day at the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Big Red a 4-3 victory over the Warriors in game two of Sunday's doubleheader.

Next Up
The Cornell softball team will return to the diamond during the weekend of Saturday, March 14th for a three-game series against Ivy League foe Yale. The Big Red and the Bulldogs will play a doubleheader on Saturday before wrapping up the series with one game on Sunday at 5K Corral Field. Game action will be broadcast on ESPN+.
