Men's Hockey Earns Multiple All-Ivy Honors; Cournoyer Named Rookie of the Year

| By:
ITHACA, N.Y. — Fresh off its 27th Ivy League title, Cornell men's hockey earned five All-Ivy League honors Wednesday, placing three players unanimously on the First Team — the most of any program.

Freshman goaltender Alexis Cournoyer headlined the Big Red trio, earning Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors. Cournoyer was one of three unanimous All-Ivy First Team selections for Cornell, joining junior forward Jonathan Castagna and fellow freshman defenseman Xavier Veilleux.

Cournoyer went 8-2-0 in Ivy contests, posting a 1.72 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage — both the best figures among Ancient Eight netminders. His goals-against average bettered Dartmouth's Emmett Croteau (2.34), while his save percentage was ahead of Princeton's Arthur Smith (.908).

Castagna recorded 11 points (6-5—11) in Ivy play, tied with Princeton's Kai Daniells (4-7—11) for third in the league in scoring. His six goals were also tied for third in the Ivy, trailing only Dartmouth's Hayden Stavroff (10), the unanimous Player of the Year, and Hank Cleaves (9), also of Dartmouth. Castagna, who netted Cornell's lone hat trick of the season at Yale on Jan. 30, also paced the Ivy League in both faceoff wins (126) and faceoff wins per game (12.60), which included registering a season-high 22 faceoff wins against Princeton on Jan. 16.

Veilleux concluded Ivy play with seven points (1-6—7), tied for second among all Ivy defensemen with Harvard's Matthew Morden, Yale's Hughie Hooker and Cornell junior defenseman George Fegaras and trailing only Dartmouth's Colin Grable (1-7—8). The first-year rearguard posted a plus-9 rating — tied for third overall and third among defensemen — and registered three of his seven points against Ancient Eight opposition on Jan. 31 at Brown (1-2—3).

Junior forward Ryan Walsh and Fegaras each earned Ivy League Honorable Mention honors. Walsh tallied seven points (4-3—7) against Ivy opponents, including two goals against Yale at Lynah Rink on Nov. 15 in one of his two multi-goal outings, and added two assists in the rematch at Yale on Jan. 30. Fegaras matched Walsh's seven points with a 1-6—7 line. He recorded points in six Ivy games and scored the game-winning goal against Harvard at Lynah Rink on Jan. 24.

Junior defenseman Hoyt Stanley was named Cornell's Academic All-Ivy selection. A hotel administration major, Stanley carries a 3.896 cumulative GPA.
