Bergin, Wilmot Power Cornell Past Columbia, 12-6

ITHACA, N.Y. — Ellie Bergin scored a natural hat trick and Ella Wilmot recorded two goals and four assists as Cornell pulled away from Columbia for a 12-6 victory Saturday afternoon at Schoellkopf Field.

The Big Red (6-3, 1-1 Ivy) built a 4-1 lead through the first quarter and never trailed, as the Big Red offense found a quick rhythm. Emily Iacobellis opened the scoring at 11:38 of the first quarter, and Kathleen Michaud followed at 9:36 to put the Big Red up 2-0. Columbia's Cordelia Flemming cut the deficit to 2-1, but Lexie Tully and Bergin answered to give Cornell a 4-1 lead at the end of the first.

Bergin built off her goal at the 49-second mark of the first, scoring two more times to cap off the natural hat trick and give Cornell a 6-1 lead. Wilmot set up all three of Bergin's goals during the stretch. Lilly Whaling added another goal to cap off the 5-0 run for the Big Red, who took a 7-2 lead into the break.

The Lions (6-3, 0-2 Ivy) showed some life in the third quarter, outscoring the Big Red 2-1 behind goals from Emma Row and Anna Becker, with the latter coming on the power play, to pull within four, 9-5.

Cornell would take full control in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Wilmot and Tully each found the back of the net, and Whaling converted a power play opportunity off a Wilmot assist for an 11-5 lead. Michaud closed the scoring with 1:27 remaining.

Wilmot finished with two goals and four assists to pace Cornell's balanced attack. Bergin added three goals and Michaud scored twice, including the game's final tally. Tully contributed two goals and Whaling finished with two goals and an assist. Iacobellis also scored for the Big Red.
In goal, senior Mackenzie Clark made seven saves on 20 shots for Cornell. Ava Kimche stopped five for Columbia.

Cornell outshot Columbia 28-20 and held a 17-13 edge in shots on goal. The Big Red also won the ground ball battle, 16-13.
