King’s program mark leads Cornell at UCF Knights Invite

ORLANDO, Fla. — Cornell opened its outdoor season Friday at the UCF Knights Invite with a series of strong early performances, highlighted by a runner-up finish and a program top-five mark in the 400-meter hurdles at the UCF Track & Field/Soccer Complex.

The day began in the field with senior Joseph Rachiele placing 13th in the javelin throw with a mark of 52.74m, setting the tone for a full slate of competition.

In the pole vault, the Big Red turned in a deep showing led by senior Kagan Mancabelli and freshman Zachary Davidson, who each cleared 4.79m to finish fourth and fifth, respectively. Senior Wyatt Ricketts added a seventh-place finish at 4.49m.

Sophomore Stepan Matura paced Cornell in the long jump, placing sixth with a leap of 6.98m, while junior Kameron Coleman finished 16th at 6.36m.

The hammer throw saw sophomore Peter Northrup deliver a fifth-place finish with a mark of 61.29m, as freshman Aidan Kerr added a 12th-place effort at 47.01m.

Cornell's throws group continued its steady production in the shot put, where freshman Joe Seib led the way in seventh place with 16.66m. Sophomore Peter Northup followed in ninth at 16.25m, and senior Noah Harman close behind in 10th at 16.20m.

On the track, senior Ryder King delivered the performance of the day in the 400-meter hurdles, placing second in 51.26 while moving into fourth all-time in program history in the event. Sophomore Jason Meza added a ninth-place finish in 53.91. Head coach Adrian Durant praised King's effort, noting the senior's mark as a significant early-season milestone.

The Big Red closed out the evening in the 200-meter dash, where sophomore Ricardo Lagares Jr. led the group with a 14th-place finish in 21.43, followed closely by sophomore Panashe Nhenga in 19th (21.62). Senior Michael Mazero (28th, 21.87), freshman Garrett Brennan (37th, 22.27), sophomore Seamus Finn (40th, 22.37), junior Neil Chowdhurry (43rd, 22.47) and freshman Adam Kaufman (47th, 22.65) rounded out Cornell's efforts in a crowded field. Durant highlighted the sprint group's performance, calling it a "great showing" from Lagares Jr. and Nhenga.

"It was a good day with some great season openers," Durant said. "Looking forward to the relays tomorrow, the men's and women's 4x100s."
