Hastings leads Cornell on Day 1 in Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. — Cornell opened its outdoor campaign Friday at the UCF Knights Invite, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the hammer throw and a series of promising early-season marks across the board.

The Big Red wasted little time settling into the meet, beginning in the field with freshman Lauren Smith making her collegiate debut in the javelin. Smith placed eighth with a throw of 40.07m, a result head coach Mike Henderson called "a great season opener," noting he was proud of the freshman's first performance at the collegiate level.

Momentum carried into the vertical events, where junior Lauren Cashman cleared 3.67m to take third in the pole vault, securing Cornell's first podium finish of the outdoor season.

In the horizontal jumps, senior Paula-Marie Brown led a trio of Big Red competitors in the long jump, placing seventh at 5.82m. She was followed by sophomore Rikki Carver (15th, 5.46m) and junior Anika Sukumar (19th, 5.43m), as Cornell built depth early in the competition.

The hammer throw proved to be the team's strongest event of the day. Junior Avery Hastings delivered a standout performance, placing second with a mark of 56.39 meters against a competitive field. Freshman Gabriella Vizcarrondo added a ninth-place finish at 51.23 meters. Henderson praised Hastings' effort as "a strong performance…a great way to start the season."

Senior Nicole Loy contributed in the shot put, finishing 11th with a throw of 13.60 meters.

On the track, junior Elise Sawyer turned in an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing in 1:01.06. Despite a late-race misstep, Henderson pointed to her upside moving forward, saying she "struggled on the last hurdle but showed great promise for an outdoor season opener."

Cornell closed out the day in the 200-meter dash, where a large field saw multiple Big Red sprinters gain early-season experience. Sophomore Olivia Walters led the group in 23rd place (24.29), followed by junior Francine Stevens (37th, 24.69), sophomore Natasha Redmon (38th, 24.70), junior Brianna Beckham (45th, 24.95), junior Rachel Bethke (47th, 25.06), freshman Divine Bamgboye (51st, 25.30), freshman Eden Oje (56th, 25.48), freshman Elika Vahhaji (70th, 26.48) and freshman Monika Vargas (74th, 27.34).

Competition will continue Saturday at 10 a.m. EST with the men's and women's high jump. Live results are available at http://live.halfmiletiming.com/meets/913/events.
